Dreams and Goals without Execution = Hallucination

Edison Hallucination

Greetings Leaders!

I’d like to take credit for the title, but as you can see Thomas Edison beat me to it. As you go about making your resolutions for the New Year, have you thought about how to actually succeed at them? If you use the 80/20 rule – only 20% of people will set themselves apart by taking a chance and setting some goals this year. Of those 20%, only 20% will achieve them. For you math geniuses, that amounts to just 4% of the total (I had to use a calculator). That’s a pretty small percentage isn’t it? When you think about it, most of the worlds wealth resides in the top few percentage points of the population. I would guess that the world’s wealthiest people are in the 4% that are setting goals this year AND achieving them. So, how do you set yourself up with the best chance at achieving your goals?

Paying Your Taxes – A Reflection On Your Life

I just finished calculating my taxes and completed the ordeal by hitting enter on the keyboard. I cringed as I imagined the electronic dollars floating across cyberspace into Uncle Sam’s coffers. I know we all have to pay taxes… well, most of us anyway. I suppose there are the extreme outliers, the destitute and the super rich, but for the vast majority of us, taxes are just a reality of life.

As I sat here crunching numbers over the past few nights, I relived 2008. Business trip to Denver. Business trip to Ohio. Presentations given. Presentations canceled. Miles driven, meals eaten. Excitement. Disappointment. Success and setbacks. Wow. For some reason, paying taxes this year was emotionally draining.

As I took inventory of the past year, it dawned on me that this was a great exercise. While we reflect and plan in January of each year, the hard reality of numbers during tax season really paints a clearer picture of your business last year.

So, how did you do? Did you make your financial targets? As we are now in the second quarter of the calendar year, now is an excellent time to ask yourself,

“Am I doing what I need to do, to make sure this year is better than the last?”

Remember, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results. What are you doing differently? If nothing…. you should take some time off to reassess what you are doing…. so this year will be better than the last.

All the best,
All the time,

The Power of a Dream – Reach for the Stars

I’m sitting here watching American Idol and was reminded what makes it so popular. The Power of a Dream. We all have dreams. We all want to be acknowledged and recognized. There were several poignant moments on the first show of the season. There was of course, Scott MacIntyre. He is almost completely blind and yet had the courage to audition. He thankfully also has talent and made it on to the next phase.

I don’t want this to be a recap of the show, you can find that almost anywhere. But, there were some things worth noting. There was another contestant who appeared to be tearing up throughout the day of his audition. Why was he so emotional? In a moment that might have passed by many viewers, he said he worked in a cubicle all week and all he wanted was to be recognized. Funny… the power that a little recognition can have on someone. When was the last time you recognized someone at work, or at home for that matter.

Of course there were also the hugs and celebrations that greeted the contestants lucky enough to get a golden ticket to Hollywood. The reason for the celebration – The Dream was still alive! Amazing, the power of a dream.

Many of you who are reading this, have a dream. What is your dream? What are you striving for? Can you describe it to me. Can you picture yourself doing it? Now the hard part…. putting feet on your dreams. There are a few things you must remember…

  1. Not all dreams come true (ouch)
  2. Achieving your dream requires that four letter word… WORK
  3. Vision (Dreams) without planning = hallucination
  4. It takes more than just having a dream to make it come true
  5. Dreams require – support from others

I will unpack these five thoughts in blogs later this week. Stay tuned…

All the best!
