Strategic Planning is obviously a vital part of an organization's success. So, how do you go about your strategic planning? With so many consultants, MBA's, educated CEOs and experts in the field, you would think Strategic Planning should be a slam dunk. It isn't. I have been in sophisticated organizations where strategic planning consisted of gathering the executives around a table for a few days and having them share their goals or business initiatives. No attempt was made to consider the alignment of their plans with the overall direction of the company, the cost/benefit of their initiatives was sometimes questionable at best, resource loading was often overlooked, and decisions were based on personalities rather than facts.
