How To Stay Married For 25 Years

Greetings Leaders!

I hesitated on blogging about this as I know I’m not an expert on relationships. However, my wife and I just celebrated our 25th Anniversary so I thought I could give my thoughts on how we got here. People write books on this stuff so to get my points across I’m going to make this a short series where I touch on one point at a time.

With the New Year just around the corner and people toying with their resolutions, I often wonder why some people achieve their dreams and others don’t. Greetings Leaders!

Like most of you, I have been following the attempt to get some kind of health care reform legislation passed. If you look at the statistics it’s hard to argue for the status quo and I think most people would agree that we need to do something. Sounds like the start of a project doesn’t it?

What were they thinking!!! As a former Commander in the US Navy, I am absolutely appalled at what has hit the news regarding the Predator Drone Program. If you haven’t heard, the Predator, one of the relatively new weapons in the US arsenal against terrorism, transmits signals unencrypted. What that means is that anyone, including terrorists, can intercept the signal and just watch the video it sends back to remote controllers of the vehicle. Some of the articles I’ve read state that the terrorists are using off the shelf (that means Radio Shack) software that costs about $30 (yes, $30 – not $30 million) to punch through US security.

Greetings Leaders!

There is an interesting initiative making its way through the California legislative process. Merry Hyatt of Redding California is pushing to have an initiative, requiring Christmas carols to be sung in public schools, placed on the ballot next year (Read the article here).

I haven’t read the initiative, but I think it is an important for a number of reasons. In order not to polarize the issue I won’t discuss the initiative itself, but want to ask the question, is it wise to take religion out of schools while at the same time teaching that evolution means there is no god?

Greetings Leaders!ring

My wife Debbie and I are celebrating our 25th Anniversary this month and to commemorate the occasion we are replacing her wedding ring with something a little bigger than we could afford in our early twenties. Not having shopped for an expensive piece of jewelry in a very long time, we decided to go to a number of places before making our purchases.

Greetings Leaders!

A lot of people, blogs, tabloids and talk shows have been lambasting Tiger over his indiscretions. Although I don’t agree with what he did, I don’t want to jump on the bandwagon, and instead am calling for grace. How many of us have messed up our own lives? Interestingly, with the divorce rate somewhere between 40-50%, I think Tiger has a lot of good company in messing up lives. Of the 50% that don’t get divorced, I wonder how many have stayed faithful? How many adults don’t have relationships with their parents or worse, with their children? How about drug use or alcohol abuse? Is Tiger really “worse” than the rest of us?

Greetings Leaders!

Alright – I know this is a weird analogy, but have you ever used the restroom designated for the other sex? At a coffee shop that I frequent, the table I normally sit at is near the restrooms. There are two of them, one for Men and the other for Women. During the morning rush, a small line inevitably begins to form, and ladies it’s not always for the Womens restroom. It’s interesting to watch people as they realize that the “other” restroom is open, while they wait in line to use “theirs”. Quite often, someone will break rank and go into the restroom designated for the opposite sex. You know, a guy goes into the Womens restroom because it is open. It’s quite funny when a women then comes up and waits her turn, and then to watch her expression when a man comes out of the Women’s restroom (or vice versa!).

Greetings Leaders!

I am usually on the road at 6am, driving to a Starbucks to plan out my day. At 6am a funny thing begins to happen. Cars begin to vacate the left hand lane as it turns into a Carpool/HOV lane. I often wonder why, after 6am, a good number of drivers will zoom in and out of traffic, driving at excessive speeds… sometimes dangerously… but, remain out of the Carpool lane, even though at 6am there is hardly a car in it.
