I constantly relate human relationships to my horsemanship. My horses have taught me many lessons about life, and one of those lessons is about control.

Horses are much bigger and stronger than we are. We can not control them. They put up with a lot of our attempts to control them and usually do what we ask. However, if a horse really wants to get a rider off her back, she WILL prevail.

When I learned that I can not control my horse, but I need to gain her willing cooperation, we started getting along much better. Now, I ask my horses to work with me rather than telling them.

By releasing my need to control my horses, I get much better results because they want to work with me.

Seems to work with people, too.
